Rwanda and Trinidad and Tobago have signed an agreement to strengthen civil aviation cooperation, opening doors for air carriers from both countries and boosting opportunities for trade and investment.
The agreement was signed Saturday during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where officials from both countries met to advance diplomatic and economic collaboration.
Rwanda’s Foreign Minister Amb. Olivier Nduhungirehe praised the deal as part of the country’s ongoing efforts to deepen international partnerships and promote shared development.
The partnership builds on diplomatic relations established three years ago, on May 26, 2022. Both nations are members of the Commonwealth and participate in broader frameworks connecting developing countries, including Africa and the Caribbean.
Rwanda and Trinidad and Tobago aim to expand cooperation through regional and international initiatives, including the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). The countries also maintain active embassies in Kigali and Port of Spain to facilitate ongoing diplomatic engagement.
The aviation agreement coincides with growing collaboration between African and Caribbean nations and follows Rwanda’s hosting of the 2022 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), underscoring its role in fostering regional and global partnerships.
Rwanda’s ambition to become a financial and investment hub, particularly through the Kigali International Financial Centre (KIFC), offers additional avenues to strengthen bilateral ties.
The agreement also emphasizes people-to-people connections, focusing on youth development and entrepreneurship to further regional engagement. Rwanda and Trinidad and Tobago share historical and cultural links, with many Caribbean populations tracing their ancestry to Africa.
