Norwegian authorities have extradited François Gasana, a Rwandan man wanted for his role in the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi, back to Rwanda. Gasana was arrested in Oslo, Norway’s capital, before being sent home to face justice.
Gasana, also known as Franky Dusabe, was convicted in 2007 by the Nyange Gacaca Court and sentenced to 19 years in prison for his involvement in the genocide. Born in 1972, he lived in Bitabage Cell, Ndaro Sector, Ngororero District in Rwanda’s Western Province, during the 1994 genocide. At that time, Gasana was a student at Save Secondary School.
The arrest and extradition followed investigations by Norway’s National Criminal Investigation Service, which confirmed Gasana’s suspected role in the genocide. Despite being only about 22 years old during the genocide, he is accused of participating in the atrocities.
The National Public Prosecution Authority (NPPA) of Rwanda has praised the Kingdom of Norway’s judicial authorities for their cooperation in extraditing genocide fugitives. This partnership is part of a broader global effort to fight impunity and bring justice to survivors of the genocide.
Gasana is expected to face further legal proceedings in Rwanda. His extradition continues the ongoing collaboration between Rwanda, international courts, and other countries to ensure that those responsible for the 1994 genocide are held accountable.
