Rwanda this Monday received a donation of medical supplies worthy US $150,000 (Rwf.145 million) to protect against COVID-19 from Egypt. The half-ton supplies will help protect frontline workers from COVID-19 by those in isolation and treatment centres.

Health Minister, Dr Daniel Ngamije received the donation on behalf of Rwanda from the Egyptian Ambassador to Rwanda, Ahmed El Ansary.

Dr Ngamije observed that the support will help reduce contamination among healthcare staff, as well as for other diseases linked to COVID-19. The supplies will be dispatched to upcountry health facilities.

He said that the donation consists of a variety of medical supplies including face masks and other materials used to cover the head as well as appropriate boots when treating the sick. The materials will protect doctors and patients during treatment. They will enable hospitals in districts and provinces to be equipped, especially where COVID-19 has manifested and areas with increasing number of contaminations.

Ambassador Ahmed El Ansary indicated that this donation represents part of the US$4 million that his country has pledged to grant to member countries of the African Union (AU) as part of the fight against COVID-19. Part of the funds will go to the AU’s Centre for Disease Control (CDC), which is also fighting COVID-19.

He said the grant supports men and women in the area of health, especially with regard to the important work of preventing against COVID-19.
