Three students were injured on Tuesday, when a small Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), operated by the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) as part of a training exercise, crashed in Rutsiro District due to adverse weather conditions. The incident occurred around 1:40 p.m. as the drone was diverted from its planned flight path.
Two of the children are receiving treatment at Kivumu Health Centre, while the third was transferred to Murunda Hospital for further care. Authorities say the injuries were sustained while the students were returning home from school.
In a statement, the RDF expressed sympathy to the families of the injured children and extended regrets over the distress caused by the accident.
“The RDF is working closely with local authorities and medical personnel to ensure the affected children receive the best possible care,” the statement read. “Additionally, the RDF will provide all necessary support to the injured children and their families.”
Local officials are continuing to monitor the situation and are coordinating with the RDF to ensure the safety of residents in the area.
