Inmates across Rwanda will have to wait for seven days to have visitors, until the National Correctional Service (RCS) ascertains that visitation facilities are ready and safe.

The announcement was made in a statement by RCS SSP spokesperson Pelly Uwera who stated that all prisons will remain closed to visitors from June 20-27, 2022  for special hygiene and sanitary activities due to take place.

“In addition to hygiene and sanitation activities, there will be awareness campaigns for prison guards and other prison staff about the general census,” the statement read

The National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR) is in the process of conducting the 5th General Census of Population and Housing which started on 16-30 August 2022.

However the announcement further stated that those with urgent needs will be assisted at the request of the Director General of the department, and other key services will be provided in the prisons.

The general census takes place every 10 years.
