Police’s continued hunt for stolen motorcycles is paying off with a sizable number recovered from different parts of the country.

Recent among the recovery include two motorcycles that were reported missing and recovered in Gisozi Sector of Gasabo District in Kigali City. Police also arrested Emmanuel Munyakazi, Isidol Sekamana and Damien Uwizeye on April 15 in connection with the theft.

The central region police spokesperson, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Emmanuel Hitayezu narrated how one of the motorcycles was stolen and recovered. He said that on April 08 Isaie Kamondo, a commercial motorcyclist operating in Ruhango District, parked his motorcycle, plate number RD 983 M in front of a restaurant and when he returned minutes later, it was gone.

Kamondo immediately reported to police and officers started a hunt and with the help of other motorcyclists, the stolen motorcycle was found in Gisozi Sector being rode by Munyakazi who had stolen it.

Police returned the motorcycle to its rightful owner while Munyakazi was arrested.

SSP Hitayezu thanked the public that provided detailed information which led to the recovery of the motorcycle and arrest of the alleged thief.

“Similar cooperation has facilitated in recovery of several stolen motorcycles and reporting crimes. We encourage the public to keep up with

Similarly, in Gisozi sector, police also arrested two people, Uwizeye and Sekamana, who were found dismantling a motorcycle that was suspected to have been stolen.

According to SSP Hitayezi, the two were arrested following a report filed by residents who saw them dismantling the moto at night.

Police is currently investigating the matter to identify the rightful owner of the motorcycle.

Last week in Nyamagabe District, Police recovered a motorcycle with plate number RE 091 C belonging to Amos Ryumugabe that had been stolen by Theogene Rukundo and Evaluate Nsengumuremyi.

The motorcycle had been stolen from Kigali and taken to Nyamagabe where the alleged thieves were caught with it.

The recovery of stolen motorcycles is part of the intensified operations against motorcycle theft that has since continued to pay-off both in terms of recovering and arresting the thieves.

Statistics indicate that twelve motorcycles have been reported at different police stations as stolen since the beginning of this year majority of which have been recovered including five of them that were recovered in Gisagara District on March 28.

Besides working with the wellwishers, police also uses GPS trackers to find stolen motorcycles – a technology that officers say would be adopted by all motorcyclists for the safety of their motos and facilitates quick recovery when stolen.
