Eight months after his forced resignation, the former Minister of State in charge of Legal Affairs Evode Uwizeyimana has just been appointed Senator by President Paul Kagame.
His appointment emerged today October 16, in a press statement released by the office of the Prime Minister.
Uwizeyimana took to twitter to show his appreciation tweeting, “Following my appointment to the Senate, the biggest privilege of my life, I want to express my boundless gratitude to H.E @PaulKagame for the renewed confidence. Your Excellency, I’m highly energetic, loyal, proud and committed to serving our Nation under your Great Leadership.”
Uwizeyimana was forced to resign from the government in February this year after pushing a woman security guard, and the act was later tweeted by an eyewitness.
The former minister apologized on Twitter saying, I deeply regret what happened. It should not have happened to me as a leader and public official. I already apologized to the ISCO staff and I now do so publicly and apologize to the public as well.
But Uwizeyimana’s apologies were not enough to ease the tensions, many Rwandans had continued to demand his resignation on social media. The pressure ended forcing the former minister to resign and narrowly escaped the justice having managed to reconcile with the security officer he had jostled.
But Uwizeyimana absence on the Rwandan political scene lasted only eight months and some two weeks. He is among the four new senators that President Kagame appointed on Thursday to complete the number of elected senators.
The three other personalities named are: André Twahirwa, who holds a doctorate in languages, Professor Jean Pierre Dusingizemungu who is also the president of IBUKA, and Epiphanie Kanziza, coordinator of the activities of a Women’s NGO working for Unity.
The Rwandan Constitution gives the authority to the President of the Republic to appoint eight senators of his choice. President Kagame had appointed on September 20, 2019 the other four senators who are: the current president of the Senate Dr. Augustin Iyamuremye, Ms. Espérance Nyirasafari, Mr. François Habiyakare and Ms. Alvéra Mukabaramba.
