The men’s national football team, Amavubi, has seen its training camp in Cairo thrown completely off course following the sudden cancellation of their planned friendly against neighbors Taifa Stars of Tanzania.
According to reliable sources in Tanzania, the FIFA friendly was axed after the Taifa Stars were denied visas to enter Egypt. The logistical headache stems from a domino effect of health concerns in Morocco and administrative visa snags that blocked the match’s relocation to Cairo.
Rwanda had initially set up their international training camp and friendly fixtures in Marrakech, Morocco. However, those plans were abruptly ripped up when Moroccan authorities canceled the fixtures, forcing the Rwandan delegation to quickly scramble and relocate their entire operation to Egypt.
The disruption traces back to strict new health restrictions introduced by Morocco over Ebola concerns in parts of the continent. These sudden measures have hit several national teams currently in camp, triggering a wider collapse of scheduled CECAFA friendly matches across the region.
The cancellation leaves Amavubi stranded without a competitive fixture during what was supposed to be a critical warm-up period. For now, the team will put their heads down and continue training in Cairo without a match partner, according to updates from sports journalist Kayiranga Ephraim, who is currently traveling with the squad.
