One Acre Fund Rwanda plans to support 1.3 million farmers during the 2027A agricultural season after reporting that its programs generated an estimated $168 million in additional income for farmers over the past year.

The nonprofit announced the target during the launch of the new planting season, saying it is expanding efforts to boost rural incomes through improved productivity, high-value crops and stronger market access.

More than 1 million farmers benefited from the organization’s Tubura program during the 2026AB season, according to One Acre Fund. Support included access to agricultural inputs, training, financing and market linkages.

Speaking at the launch, One Acre Fund Rwanda Country Director Belinda Bwiza said increasing production alone is not enough to improve agricultural livelihoods.

“Transforming Rwanda’s agriculture requires increasing productivity while helping farmers earn more from what they grow,” Bwiza said.

The organization said it distributed more than 50,500 metric tons of agricultural inputs across 27 districts during the previous season and trained more than 430,000 farmers in improved farming practices.

It also said it expanded market access efforts, facilitating exports of 378 metric tons of produce, including avocados, chili peppers, green beans and green coffee, while helping more than 15,000 farmers secure buyers for their harvests.

In seed development, the RICA Seed Center, in partnership with One Acre Fund, produced 4,500 metric tons of certified seeds for maize, beans and soybeans and trained 32 specialists in seed technology and seed business development.

The Extension Center of Excellence, established with the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB), certified 49 agricultural extension officers in its first nationally recognized cohort and has reached 270 extension advisors nationwide.

Climate resilience remained a key focus. One Acre Fund said it distributed 30 million forest tree seedlings and 800,000 fruit trees over the past year, benefiting about 1 million farmers. It said it has distributed 145 million trees in Rwanda since 2016.

The organization said it plans to reach 400,000 young farmers during the 2027AB season through training, financial inclusion and support across agricultural value chains.

Rwanda’s Minister of Agriculture and Animal Resources, Dr. Telesphore Ndabamenya, said the government would continue working with development partners to increase agricultural production, strengthen food security and expand market opportunities.

The event also featured testimonies from farmers on the impact of commercial agriculture.

Jeanne d’Arc Nyiransabimana, an avocado farmer from Gakenke District in Northern Province, said the crop improved her family’s living conditions.

“My family has improved its living conditions. Our children are in school, and we are able to meet our household needs,” she said.

Nyiransabimana said her family grows short-cycle crops while waiting for avocado trees to mature.

One Acre Fund says its work aligns with Rwanda’s Vision 2050 and national agricultural transformation goals.
