Leaders in Kicukiro Sector of Kicukiro district have launched a three-week awareness drive aimed at addressing challenges affecting families and young people, saying strong households are essential to national development.
The campaign, running from Feb. 15 to March 8, 2026, seeks to resolve persistent social issues at the family level. Held under the theme “My role in building a secure and capable family,” the initiative will conclude with events marking International Women’s Day.
Mukandahiro Hydayat, executive secretary of Kicukiro Sector, said the goal is to make the sector a model for grassroots family education.
“We want every resident to understand their role in building a stable family,” she said. “The campaign will also help us uncover challenges within households, especially those affecting youth, including divorce-related cases.”
Officials identified key concerns such as poor communication between spouses and neglect of family responsibilities. Youth-related challenges include drug abuse, depression, emotional distress and reluctance among some school graduates to pursue self-employment despite limited job opportunities.
Local authorities are urging residents not to conceal domestic conflicts and to seek help from community leaders or trusted individuals before problems escalate.
The sector also plans targeted discussions with single-parent households and young women raising children in their parental homes. While officials lack precise statistics, they acknowledge such cases are present and require intervention.
On Feb. 26, sector leaders will meet with representatives of affected families to discuss practical solutions. In partnership with religious organizations and community counselors, the campaign will also provide guidance on strengthening communication, unity and cooperation as foundations for stable and prosperous families.
