A group of 54 young people from low-income families in Musha Sector, Rwamagana District, are receiving professional tailoring training through a program supported by the Rotary Club of Kigali Cosmopolitan.

On Sunday, July 20, 2025, members of the club visited the training center to check on the progress of the youth, who are learning tailoring through a partnership between the Rotary Club and the REAP project.

“We didn’t know them, but they chose to help us,” said Rachel Uwimpuhwe, one of the trainees. “Now that I’ve been given this opportunity, I want to use it to support myself and improve my family’s life.”

The initiative targets vulnerable youth, including teenage mothers and those from families affected by poverty and domestic challenges. In addition to vocational training, the program offers mental health support to help participants cope with personal difficulties.

Yves Niyonkuru, a trainee from Rukombe Village in Kabare Cell, said he joined the program with the goal of creating a better future for his family.

“Tailoring is a skill that can help me escape poverty,” he said. “I want to start my own business and eventually employ others.”

Srinivas Cheruvu, president of the Rotary Club of Kigali Cosmopolitan, said supporting youth is one way the club contributes to national development.

“Rotary exists to bring change,” he said. “When young people are empowered, they contribute to building a stronger country.”

Musha Sector Executive Secretary Jean Claude Rwagasana thanked the club for its support, saying the impact of the program is already visible.

“These young people had little hope before,” he said. “Now some have even started getting small jobs. They’re gaining skills and confidence.”

The Rotary Club of Kigali Cosmopolitan was established in 2024 and is focusing on empowering youth through vocational training and other community-based initiatives.
