President Paul Kagame joined Ghanians on January 7, 2025 for the presidential inauguration of John Dramani Mahama and Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang. The ceremony took place at the Black Star Square in Accra, Ghana’s capital.

The event highlighted the strong bond between Rwanda and Ghana, which dates back to significant historical moments. In 1994, a Ghanaian soldier, Captain Mbaye Diagne, became a symbol of bravery for his efforts to save lives during the Genocide against the Tutsi. His actions remain a cornerstone of the friendship between the two nations.

President Mahama, who won the December 2024 election with 56% of the vote, previously served as Ghana’s president from 2012 to 2017. In his speech, he pledged to focus on sectors such as agriculture, education, and infrastructure during his new term.

Rwanda and Ghana have a long-standing partnership in several key areas: security, trade, air transport, tourism, and cultural exchange. Rwanda opened its embassy in Accra in 2020, while Ghana established its embassy in Kigali in 2024.

The two nations have signed several agreements to strengthen their collaboration. These include pacts in the aviation industry, defense, tourism, trade, and economic cooperation. The goal is to enhance trade and investment between their nations and beyond, with a focus on boosting African development.

In his congratulatory message, President Kagame praised President Mahama’s victory and expressed Rwanda’s commitment to deepening its partnership with Ghana. “We share a strong vision for development, and we look forward to working together to advance our cooperation and guide Africa toward a prosperous future,” said President Kagame.

Both countries have made remarkable progress in fostering relations. This includes cooperation in education, business, and security. Their growing ties aim to benefit not only Rwanda and Ghana but also the entire African continent.
