Rwanda’s incumbent President Paul Kagame on Friday presented his candidacy to the National Electoral Commission (NEC) seeking reelection for a fourth term in the presidential election scheduled for July 15.

Kagame, the RPF candidate for the upcoming presidential elections was the first candidate to present his papers to the commission, was accompanied by First Lady Jeannette Kagame, RPF Vice-Chairperson, RPF Secretary-General, and RPF commissioners.

NEC has today started to receive files of prospective candidates for presidency in the July 14-15 presidential and parliamentary elections.

Rwanda’s ruling party picked President Kagame as its candidate for the July election. Kagame’s candidacy was unopposed during the RPF congress that convened over 2,000 party members on 9 March 2024.

Following the choice of RPF Inkotanyi, most of the other political parties who already belong to the National Forum of Political Parties announced their stand as allies of the former. Those include PSD, PL, PDI, PPC, PSP, PSR and UDPR.

President Kagame, 66, was first elected in 2000 as interim President replacing Pasteur Bizimungu who had resigned.

He won the presidency in elections in 2003, 2010 and 2017 – with more than 90 percent of the vote.
