Hold onto your raincoats, the Rwanda Meteorology Agency (RMA) has issued a wet and wild forecast for February, predicting significantly heavier than usual rainfall across the country.
The agency forecasts rainfall varying between 50 and 250 mm – considerably higher than usual for this time of year – with the second half of February experiencing the heaviest downpours.
Regions like Rusizi, Nyamasheke, and western Ngororero are bracing for the brunt, expecting a tropical soaking of 200-250mm of rain forecast – enough to turn dusty roads into raging rivers.
According to RMA, the first half of February might offer a brief respite, with rainfall staying near normal. But brace yourselves for the second half, because that’s when the skies truly open up.
Even Kigali City and the Eastern Province won’t escape the deluge, expecting a respectable 50-100mm, promising damp commutes and overflowing gutters.
Moderate to strong winds, up to 8m/s, will whip across much of the country, adding a blustery element to the watery chaos. But fear not, gentle souls, some areas like Kigali and Burera can expect kinder breezes, perfect for a blustery walk (with an umbrella, of course).
Temperature-wise, Kigali and the eastern regions will bask in the warmest weather, with highs reaching a balmy 28°C.
Meanwhile, the northern reaches of Nyabihu and the Volcanoes National Park will shiver in cooler temperatures, dipping below their usual maximums. So pack accordingly – February in Rwanda is a tale of two climates.
Thought RMA, says that this downpour could be a boon for farmers, replenishing parched lands and boosting agricultural yields. Plus, who doesn’t love a cozy night in with a hot drink and the rhythmic pitter-patter on the roof?
