President Paul Kagame has welcomed a delegation from the African Materials Research Society (AMRS) and the African Institute for Scientific and Technological Innovations (ARIST) who are attending the 12th International AMRS Conference (AMRS 2024).
Prof. Winston Wole Soboyejo, AMRS Board Chairman is leading the delegation to the conference that has attracted more than 500 experts from across the globe, including scientists, researchers, industry leaders, and academics.
This year’s theme centers around the need for collaborative international research on materials used in vital sectors like energy, health, agriculture, and construction. Discussions will also focus on the critical gaps that exist in Africa’s development of these technologies.
The conference, which began on December 16, will run until Thursday, December 19. It explores a broad range of topics, including the use of materials in health, agriculture, energy, and infrastructure.
The impact of nanotechnology, innovations in environmental protection, water resources management, and mining of precious metals are also key areas of focus.
Another major topic is the development of advanced and durable technology and electronic materials. Experts are examining how to enhance the quality and longevity of these materials, ensuring they meet global standards and address the unique needs of Africa.
The President’s Office shared that the discussions have also covered building scientific knowledge, strengthening cooperation between nations, and focusing on the needs of the global research community. Particular attention has been given to the challenges facing Africa and how these can be overcome through innovative research and partnerships.
The AMRS conferences have been held every two years since the first event in 2002. The gatherings aim to promote knowledge exchange and foster closer collaboration among scientists and researchers from across the world. Previous conferences have been hosted in countries such as South Africa, Morocco, Tanzania, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Ghana, Botswana, and Senegal.
With Rwanda hosting the conference, it further solidifies its position as a hub for scientific research and technological innovation on the continent. The event offers a platform for experts to exchange ideas and explore solutions that can benefit Africa and the world at large.
