Kavumu Airport in South Kivu fell under the control of M23 rebels by early Friday afternoon. Local sources confirm that the rebels also took over the commercial district of Kavumu, located 30 kilometers from Bukavu.
According to reports, the rebels advanced from Kabamba in the Irhambi Katana group, entering Kabare territory on the morning of February 14.
A day earlier, on February 13, the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) and their allies mounted strong resistance in Kalehe territory in an attempt to prevent the rebels from seizing the airport. However, sources indicate that no significant confrontation occurred between Katana and Kavumu.
