By: Jejje Muhinde;

Matchday 1 Group A

Burundi 3-0 Djibouti

Uganda 2-0 Rwanda

The CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship got underway on Wednesday at FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru, but Rwanda who suffered a loss in the opener have to win to confirm their place in the knockout stage.

Placed in Group A, the Rwandan ladies lost 2-0 to Crested Cranes of Uganda in a game watched by a sizable crowd.

Both sides marched for the opening half an hour, playing with intensity.

Fazika Ikwaput opened the scoring for the host with her first on the day arriving at the 36th minute when she fired into an empty net.

Two minutes after the break, she got the brace after getting the most out of a mistake by Rwandan goalkeeper Claudine Itangishaka.

In the other group action, Burundi did just enough to see off Djibouti in the first game with a 3-0 victory.

With both Uganda and Burundi on three points each, Rwanda knows they need a win in the remaining two fixtures to confirm their place in the knockout stage.

Rwanda takes on Burundi on Friday, June 3, 2022, before concluding the group stage round games against Djibouti on Sunday June 5.

After three years of no action due to the outbreak of COVID-19, the prestigious CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship returns with 8 teams taking part.

These include Uganda, Tanzania, Zanzibar, South Sudan, Burundi, Rwanda, Djibouti and Ethiopia.
