Canada Governor General expected in Kigali

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Julie Payette, the Governor General of Canada is expected in Rwanda from 5 to 9 April, 2019.

At the invitation of President Paul Kagame, the Governor General will attend the events of 25th anniversary of the genocide against the Tutsi. During an official ceremony, she will lay a wreath to honour the victims of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi.

A statement announcing her visit said that Canada and Rwanda have a strong relationship based on a shared commitment to advancing gender equality, protecting the environment and strengthening peacekeeping. The visit of the Governor General will reaffirm our friendship and reinforce our common values ​​and common goals. The Governor General will represent all Canadians when she lays a wreath in honour of the lives lost during the genocide against.

Canada recognizes the sacrifices made by UNAMIR peacekeepers (UN Mission in Rwanda) commanded by Canadian General Roméo Dallaire who risked their lives in 1994 to save others and protect those seeking refuge.

During her visit, the Governor General of Canada will also visit the Kigali-based African Institute of Mathematical Sciences to highlight the importance of promoting the careers of mathematical sciences in young people, so that they are prepared for the jobs of young people.
