The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced the postponement of the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, initially scheduled to take place in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, to August 2025.
In a statement released January. 14 ,2025, CAF acknowledged significant progress made by the three host nations in constructing and upgrading key infrastructure such as stadiums, training fields, hotels, and hospitals. However, CAF Technical and Infrastructure experts, including those stationed in the host countries, recommended additional time to ensure all facilities meet the required standards for hosting a successful tournament.
CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the host nations’ leaders—Kenya’s President William Ruto, Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan, and Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni.
“I am impressed with the ongoing construction and renovations of the football infrastructure and facilities in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. I am confident that the stadiums, training fields, hotels, hospitals, and other infrastructure will meet CAF standards for hosting, in August 2025, a very successful CHAN,” Dr. Motsepe stated.
Despite the postponement, preparations for the tournament remain on track. CAF will hold the CHAN draw in Nairobi on Wednesday, 15 January 2025, at 8:00 PM local time. The exact date for the tournament’s commencement in August 2025 will be announced later.
