Africa’s leading handball nations have once again underlined their dominance at the Men’s Handball Africa Cup of Nations in Kigali, with Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria and Cape Verde all advancing to the semi-finals.
The final four was confirmed at the end of the main round on Tuesday, with the quartet also sealing qualification for the 2027 IHF Men’s World Championship.
Defending champions Egypt were in ruthless form, overwhelming Nigeria 48–22 in the most one-sided result of the round. Tunisia followed with a measured 37–27 win over Cape Verde, while Algeria had to work harder before edging past Angola 27–22 to book their place.
Cape Verde’s progression continues to echo their growing stature in African handball, as they join three of the continent’s most established sides in the closing stages of the tournament.
The semi-finals will be played on 29 January, with teams eliminated at this stage contesting classification matches for places five to eight later the same day.
Away from the title race, hosts Rwanda extended their encouraging run in the President’s Cup with a 34–26 victory over Zambia, their third win of the competition. Coached by Tunisian Hafedh Zouabi, Rwanda are now guaranteed to finish between ninth and 12th place.
Elsewhere, Gabon impressed with a commanding 40–19 win against Uganda, Cameroon eased past Kenya 37–22, while Congo Brazzaville and Benin shared the points in a 27–27 draw. President’s Cup fixtures resume on 30 January.
