Rwanda and Uganda have opened a new border post Rwempasha-Kizinga, which is between Rwempasha Sector, Nyagatare district in Rwanda and Ngoma Gombolola in Uganda.
The border crossing was officially opened on Wednesday, July 5, according to a communiqué by the Immigration Directorate General (DGIE).
In a statement, the DGIE said it was pleased to inform the general public that the Rwempasha/Kizinga border post, is open between Rwanda and Uganda in Nyagatare District.
Initially, the border was just an entry point for local residents on either side of the border used mainly for visiting and trading.
It is located in Rugarama Cell, Rwempasha Sector, Nyagatare District in Eastern Province. It is added to the other three borders Cyanika, Gatuna and Kagitumba.
The opening of this newly opened border comes after the Gatuna border was reopened in January 2022. This was following its closure for almost four years due to tension between Rwanda and Uganda.
At that time, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Rwanda said that the reopening of the Gatuna border was done to facilitate, speed up and show the will that the country had in meeting the relationship, and solving the problems between the two countries.
In March 2022, Cyanika in Musanze District was reopened to all travelers, after more than two years closed because of Covid-19.
Kyanika (also known as Cyanika on the Rwandan side) is the official land border crossing between Uganda and Rwanda, located in Kisoro district, southwestern Uganda.
