Rwandan Prime Minister Edouard Ngirente this Wednesday arrived in Dakar, Senegal where he will attend the 2nd edition of the Dakar Summit on agriculture and agribusiness that will discuss African food production potential.
The Dakar Summit is scheduled from January 25 to 27, 2023 under the theme “Feeding Africa: Food Sovereignty and Resilience.”
Twenty heads of state are expected in the Senegalese capital, according to the African Development Bank (AfDB), co-organizer with Senegal of the summit. The leaders will hold meetings to mobilize and harmonize government resources, development partners and private sector financing to release Africa’s food potential.
The AfDB estimates that by removing the obstacles to agricultural development and accompanying it with new investments, agricultural production in Africa could increase from US$280 billion a year to US$1 trillion by 2030.
“Investing in increased agricultural productivity, supporting infrastructure, climate-smart farming systems, with private sector investments along the food value chain can help make Africa a breadbasket for the world,” explained the AfDB.
During the summit, private sector actors will commit to developing critical value chains. Central bank governors and finance ministers, meanwhile, will commit to developing financing arrangements for the implementation of the food and agriculture pacts, in collaboration with ministers responsible for agriculture, as well as with private sector actors, including commercial banks and financial institutions.
