The reconstruction of the Birembo Bridge that connects Kamonyi and Ruhango is to cost around 150million, the Governor of the Southern Province Alice Kayitesi has said.

The bridge at one of the inlets of river Akanyaru connects Mbuye and Nyarubaka sectors in Kamonyi district was damaged by heavy rains in November 2022 leaving farmers counting losses as they’re unable to access agro-processing industries nor the markets.

The Governor of the Southern Province, Kayitesi Alice is reported to have said that the bridge is essential to the area, because it is used to transport sand by trucks, deliver coffee to the processing factory and to transport rice and potato produce to Mbuye sector.

She said that both authorities from Kamonyi and Ruhango have visited the site and discussions are said to be in pipeline to determine where the money to be allocated for repair will come from.

“I am not saying that it will be repaired tomorrow or the day after because we have to first discuss to see where the money is coming from, but it is urgent because the bridge is a big concern for our people and it will cost around Rwf 100 and  Rwf 150 million Frw for the repairs”

Governor Kayitesi explained that the reason why the bridge was damaged was due to the water that passed under the bridge.

In addition, she promised that the Green Amayaga project will help protect the edges of the bridge and others that are under construction such as the one in Mukunguri which is already completed, and is being used even though there are still final works to finalize.

Talking about another bridge that connects Muhanga and Ruhango Districts in Byimana and Nyambuye Sectors, going to Kanyarira and Mpanda, Governor Kayitesi said that the study was carried out and money for repair has already been determined, however she did not mention when the construction will start.
