The first lady of Rwanda, Jeannette Kagame arrived in Doha, Qatar, to attend an international conference celebrating the 30th anniversary of the International Year of the Family (IYF) set for October 30 and 31, at the Qatar National Convention Center.
This conference is organized by the Doha International Family Institute (DIFI), part of the Qatar Foundation, and aims to address extreme poverty and intergenerational transfers within families by improving the well-being of each family unit.
Madam Jeannette Kagame is expected to engage in productive discussions with participants at this conference, which follows a series of events that began on May 15 when the international community celebrated International Day of Families in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
Under the theme ‘Family and Contemporary Megatrends: Can Policy Shape Technological, Migration, Urbanization, Demographic, and Climate Changes to Protect and Empower Families‘ the conference will gather world leaders, policymakers, researchers, and representatives from international and non-governmental organisations to discuss the influence of contemporary global trends on families.
The conference aims to continue the legacy of the IYF, initially declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 1994, which emphasized the family as the fundamental cornerstone of society, necessitating protection and support.
The conference will focus on ensuring that family well-being remains central in policy-making and social support frameworks.
Every year on May 15, the International Day of Families is celebrated as a campaign to find solutions to the challenges faced by families.
On July 3 of this year, a similar event was held at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, focusing on the difficulties that contemporary families are facing, including issues related to technology use, urbanization, migration, population growth, and climate change.
