In a crackdown on reckless driving, Rwandan police have arrested 22 individuals for tampering with speed governors in public service and cargo vehicles.
The arrests stem from ongoing operations aimed at enforcing the country’s speed governor policy.
According to Rwanda National Police (RNP) spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Boniface Rutikanga, speeding is a primary cause of road accidents and fatalities. By modifying or disconnecting the speed governors, drivers are putting the lives of others at risk.
“We have apprehended individuals who completely removed the devices, those who manipulated them to bypass the speed limit, and even those who installed switches to deactivate the governors when they sense police presence,” ACP Rutikanga said.
The RNP has warned drivers and mechanics involved in such practices to desist, emphasizing that the operations will continue. The speed governor mandate, introduced in 2015, is part of broader efforts to enhance road safety in Rwanda.
Despite a significant reduction in road accidents due to the Gerayo Amahoro campaign, reckless driving remains a persistent issue. The police are committed to enforcing traffic laws and holding offenders accountable.
