The current heavy rainfall being experienced in Rwanda has led to significant damage to properties.

The National Center for Meteorological Sciences ‘Meteo Rwanda’ has predicted that in May 2023 there will be extraordinary rains in the country, warning Rwandans to be careful.

In a statement issued on May 1, 2023, the national weather forecast center said that between 50 and 200 millimeters of rain is expected in May.

The expected heavy rain is slightly higher than the amount of rain that normally falls in the month of May in many parts of the country.

The first part is expected to rain above the average rainfall that usually falls in the country, while the second and third parts are expected to rain as usual in those parts of the month of May.

Precipitation is expected to come from warmer oceans, the Pacific Ocean, and the Indian Ocean.

Slightly above normal for the month of May with the addition of wind direction to the section Northern Hemisphere.

Between 175 and 200 millimeters of rain is expected in the North West part of the country and in a small part of Nyamasheke District.

Between 150 and 175 millimeters of rain is expected in the rest of the Western and North Provinces, except for Gicumbi and the southern regions of Rulindo and Gakenke, where between 100 and 150 millimeters of rain is anticipated.

Less rain is expected in the northern and central parts of Nyagatare region and in the southern regions of Kirehe, Ngoma and Bugesera districts.
