The Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) military has revised the death toll from the thwarted coup attempt in Kinshasa on Sunday, May 19th, to four. This includes the leader of the attackers, Christian Malanga, a Congolese-American national.
General Sylvain Ekenge, spokesperson for the DRC Armed Forces (FARDC), confirmed the new figures in a televised address on Sunday evening. He revealed that the attackers possessed advanced equipment, including drones.
General Ekenge assured the public that the situation is under control and urged residents to resume their daily activities.
Confusion Reigns Early Sunday
Gunfire erupted early Sunday morning in Kinshasa’s central Gombe commune, where government institutions are located. Residents were startled awake by the sounds of gunfire.
Around 4:30 am, a group of armed men dressed in military uniforms attacked the residence of Vital Kamerhe, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy, who is also a candidate for the National Assembly presidency.
According to Michel Moto, Mr. Kamerhe’s spokesperson, two police officers guarding the residence and one attacker were killed in the clash.
The armed group then proceeded to target the Palais de la Nation, the presidential palace.
The Republican Guard intercepted the attackers, who were reportedly clad in camouflage and carrying flags of the former Republic of Zaire, a few hours after the attack.
Videos circulating on social media showed the attackers claiming their intention to “change how the Republic is managed.”
The Republican Guard remains deployed on Tshatshi Boulevard, with armored vehicles positioned around the Presidential Palace.
