Rwandan motorists will face slightly higher fuel costs starting today, following a period of declining prices at the pump.
The Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA) announced the new prices on Thursday, which will be in effect for the next two months.
The maximum retail price for gasoline (petrol) has increased by Rwf 127 per liter, rising from Rwf 1639 to Rwf 1764. Diesel prices also saw an upward adjustment, with a hike of Rwf 52 per liter, bringing the new price to Rwf 1684.
According to RURA, these adjustments are a direct response to recent fluctuations in global petroleum prices.
The latter half of 2023 saw a welcome decrease in fuel costs for Rwandans, with gasoline dropping by Rwf 183 per liter and diesel by Rwf 27 in December. This downward trend continued with a slight price reduction in June 2023.
“Fuel pump prices are reviewed every two months to reflect the realities of the global petroleum product market,” explained RURA in a statement. While the recent increase reverses the downward trend, the price hike remains modest compared to the significant reductions seen in the latter half of 2023.
