RwandAir on Monday launched new flights to Zanzibar, Tanzania, and resumed service to Mombasa, Kenya, expanding its network across East Africa.

A Boeing B737-800NG departed Kigali International Airport for Zanzibar to inaugurate the new route. When the aircraft arrived at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, it received a ceremonial water salute, a traditional gesture used to welcome new aircraft or celebrate the start of new routes.

The airline’s return to Mombasa marks its first service to the Kenyan coastal city since 2019. Zanzibar, meanwhile, is a new addition to RwandAir’s schedule. With both routes, the carrier now serves three destinations in Tanzania and two in Kenya.

Yvonne Makolo, the CEO of RwandAir said in October that the additions align with the company’s broader growth strategy. “Returning to Mombasa and launching services to Zanzibar is another step in our expansion journey,” she said. “By broadening our reach in East Africa, we can better position Kigali as a key hub, offer customers more opportunities to explore the region, and strengthen trade, tourism and regional cooperation.”

RwandAir will operate the Zanzibar–Mombasa route four times a week, with flights on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
